Wax
Many sources indicate that Wax is the oldest method to refinish your floor. Since sophisticated finishing products appeared. Wax is a more natural product, it produces less VOCs and toxicity.
Other advantages are that it is easy to apply, it allows good penetration into the wood, and you will have low luster on your floors. However, a major disadvantage, is that Wax darkens the wood.
Oil sealer
This is a very easy DIY task. Plus, there is low production of VCOs and its odor is more pleasant than other finishers. Also, the oil sealer enhances the look of wood patterns because of its deep penetration into the wood.
However, you will need to do your hardwood floor refinishing every two or three years.
Polyurethane
This is the more common wood refinishing product. Also, you can find two types of Polyurethane products: water-based and oil-based.
Water-based polyurethane is eco-friendly and produces low VOCs. Also, those products dry clear.
Oil-based Polyurethane last more time than water-based products. Also, those products are useful to cover larger areas. However, you need to wait more time for drying, and the odor emitted by this substance is stronger than any other refinishing product.
Shellac
Shellac is another easy-to-apply finisher. For DIY lovers, this is a great product, which was so popular before the introduction of Polyurethane.
The shellac possesses some Wax, so it doesn’t produce as many toxic substances as other products. However, Shellac doesn’t last for too much time, so you will have to apply it more often.
